That surprised me too, to be honest, and I spent some time thinking about it. It makes sense because the biggest effort will be after, the throw. Again, I was caught with the same question when I watched it at first.

Fully agree Luca. Now that I tried it I realise that lifting arms high expands the rib-cage. So an inhalation comes natural. And then followed by an explosive throw (exhale). Observing in which moments the diaphragm gets squeezed is an indicator for an exhale.
