Many BJJ students view the concept of strategy as a trait of professional athletes, or more advanced training partners. Nothing could be further from the truth.
According to Rickson, strategy is one of the pillars of the study of BJJ, and it must be developed in the student from the first weeks of training. It's a matter of definition: while, to some, strategy consists of intricate tactical planning to beat a given opponent, Rickson sees it as the art of always having a plan B ready to go. That is, counting on a simpler, automatic, effective alternative for reacting -- with less force and more intelligence.
Check out, in the following video, how Rickson develops a student's intelligence and strategy from their first few self-defense classes.

I recently had my first competition. I was able to win one and the lost by submission with a guillotine choke. I was mid fight going how did Cassia get out of this choke... Master Rickson just showed this!!! For the life of me I couldn't remember to put my hand on her chest and wiggle my neck out. (i have to review this video). The competition was the highlight of my trip. I was even undefeated for about 45minutes. It felt great. However, it has left me with parts of my arm and shoulder numb. Dr. Google (my least favorite MD of all time) says it is likely the Scalenes muscle in the neck. Recommendations?
Hi Amber, thanks a lot for you valuable feedback.. your competition experience was really awesome. Numbness from a neck injury is an important matter and I would talk to a Doctor to evaluate it with the proper exams asap.. Best
Thank You for your concern and I might have gone but it went away with just a bit of Dixie cup ice massage and Motrin.
Master Rickson...I saw a thread where I read that you choked someone during rolls with the same choke multiple times that your Son did against Gilbert Durinho. It was kind of a loopchoke but with leg over head.
What would be the make it or break it details along side control for this choke?
Thankyou
